I used to ride the bus ALL the time before I got a car and the public transportation system in Denver drove me crazy sometimes. The bus can get delayed by something as simple as the bus driver not taking off right away, because someone doesn’t have enough money or unruly people who get kicked off the bus or a number of things.
I watched my connecting bus drive away multiple times, because of random things, which made me an hour late quite often. I was on a few busses that broke down too and RTD doesn’t care about your schedule.
If you want a more reliable way to go, take the Light Rail. It’s faster, less likely to break down or be delayed, and you won’t get stuck in rush hour traffic either (which I also dealt with while riding the bus)
I rode the bus when I lived in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Denver and in my opinion Denver is the WORST. I never had problems with public transportation in LA or Vegas, but I did ALL the time in Denver.
There’s a Light Rail station not too far from DTC, on Quebec Street (just North of Quebec and Belleview) If you’re in the heart of DTC then the 465 bus will take you from DTC Pkwy and Prentice to Quebec and Belleview, then you just have to walk North on Quebec a tiny bit.

As far as safety goes, I never had any issues with the Light Rail. The bus, minimal issues, but it was drunk people and crabby people taking it out on the drivers.
